Serie A enforcer would be significant upgrade on Toby Alderweireld for Tottenham

Spurs will enter the transfer market for new additions during the summer transfer window. Having not signed a player since Lucas Moura in January 2018, it seems certain Mauricio Pochettino will strengthen.

One man who has been linked with a move to north London is Sampdoria central defender Joachim Andersen. Sky Sports report that Spurs have scouted the Danish defender recently.

The 22-year-old has played 33 games for the Serie A side this season, proving one of the club’s most reliable performers.

A bizarre £25 million release clause in the contract of Toby Alderweireld could see him depart Spurs this summer. If the Belgian leaves, Pochettino will almost certainly need a new defender.

Andersen would represent a solid replacement.

According to Who Scored, Andersen averages 2.4 aerials won each game, whilst he also boasts a pass success of 88.9%.

Alderweireld has proved a decent player for Spurs, particularly this season, but his departure wouldn’t be the end of the world. Not least if they can secure Andersen as a replacement.

At 22, the big Dane’s career is still in its infancy. Alderweireld is 30 now and won’t be around forever. Signing a younger, more mobile upgrade now would represent good business for Spurs.

The Spurs man is out of contract in 2020 and Pochettino won’t want to lose him for free. If a team is forthcoming with the £25 million, they would be wise to cash-in and make Andersen the focal point of the back four ahead of his peak years.
