When Tottenham Hotspur signed Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the summer, there was somewhat of a mixed reaction from Spurs fans.

Although the Dane came with an impressive CV – a stint at Bayern Munich with four Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and a Club World Cup – he had been frozen out at Southampton prior to his Spurs switch, and maybe he wasn’t really a marquee signing as such.

Hojbjerg’s Spurs debut against Everton didn’t go to plan either, failing to click with Harry Winks in a midfield partnership which lacked pace and creativity.

In the words of Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, the partnership was “a quiet nightmare” as the Toffees ran out 1-0 winners.

Since then, however, the 25-year-old’s form has improved massively, becoming one of the first names on Jose Mourinho’s team sheet and putting in solid performances week in, week out.

Hojbjerg was especially impressive against LASK, excelling at tasks like mopping up on the edge of his box and pressing at the other end.

He even threw in some showboating skills for good measure with a double pirouette to get away from two opposition players.

“He’s going to bring a lot to the Tottenham team,” Eric Dier said in September. “He has attributes that we’ve been missing.


“He’s very professional, he has a fantastic attitude and work rate and I think he brings leadership qualities as well.”

And it’s not taken long for those attributes to firmly come to the fore, proving Mourinho pulled off a masterclass in snapping the tenacious player up.
