Spurs should offer Erik Lamela to Napoli to seal Dries Mertens signing

Spurs are said to be monitoring Napoli forward Dries Mertens ahead of the summer window, with Arsenal also said to be in the mix for the Belgian.

Despite being 33, Mertens is very much still considered to be on top of his game. He is still a regular in Naples and Voetbal24 have claimed a number of clubs are keeping tabs on him.

But while Mertens will be settled in Italy, meaning a move to England could be unlikely overall, Spurs could well hold a bit of a trump card which could see them beat the Gunners to his signature.

That trump card is their current winger and reported Napoli target, Erik Lamela. Corriere dello Sport claims Lamela is close to leaving Spurs, with Napoli the most likely destination as things stand.

Could it be, then, that Spurs look to offer Lamela in a deal for Mertens? It’s not beyond the realms of possibility.

Spurs could offer Lamela for Mertens this summer

In a summer market which is going to be a bit diluted thanks to the pandemic, swap deals may be a good way of doing business.

Spurs are one club who have seen revenues impacted massively. Daniel Levy, then, will be looking to wheel and deal his way around the transfer market.

Using Lamela to get Mertens would be a smart move. The Argentinian has never really hit the heights many expected when he arrived and it’s no surprise he’s being considered for a sale.

But in landing Mertens, Spurs would be getting someone in return to fill the gap. Not only that, but the Belgian is a proven player and knows where the net is. He’s more direct than Lamela, and at 33, might just fancy the chance of proving himself in the PL.

This sort of deal is certainly something Spurs should look at given the financial state of the game.
