Spurs reportedly make contact over £110k-a-week star Glenn Hoddle has deemed 'absolutely brilliant'

Tottenham Hotspur are once again being linked with James Maddison ahead of the start of the new Premier League season.

Spurs have reportedly been eyeing the Leicester City star for a long time.

Dean Jones recently claimed that Tottenham have made enquiries about the England ace.

“I’m told Spurs have touched base over Maddison,” the transfer insider wrote on GiveMeSport.

“And a deal would not be impossible but it would cost them a lot of money.

“Probably more than they would want to spend. But you never know, the door isn’t closed.”

And The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke has also spoken about Tottenham’s purported interest in Maddison recently.

“I think this is the one missing piece of the Tottenham squad, what if they want to play in a different way?” he said on The Athletic’s YouTube channel.

“If they want to play a 3-4-3 they don’t need James Maddison.

“But if Conte decides he wants an extra midfielder and use a 3-5-2 to unpick the defence in that way, maybe it would make sense.

“He’s clearly been on the Tottenham Hotspur radar for a very long time.

“I can just about see why it may work for them this summer, but clearly he’s not top of the list and he wasn’t top of the list at the start of the summer.

“But there would be a lot of upside if they were able to pull it off.”

“In the England team every day of the week”

Tottenham were reportedly after Christian Eriksen earlier this summer, but Manchester United won the race.

And Giovani Lo Celso’s future at Spurs appears uncertain amid links with the likes of Villarreal and Fiorentina.

So there’s scope for Antonio Conte to potentially bring in a creative midfielder.

And Maddison would be a great shout, as he’s a world-class, Premier League-proven player in the peak of his career.

The £110,000-a-week attacker was back to his best last season, registering 18 goals and provide 12 assists in all competitions.

Two Tottenham legends have also lauded Maddison in recent years.

Harry Redknapp told Maddison in 2020, as per the Daily Mail: ‘We’ve been short of that person who can just do something fantastic.

“And I would have you in the England team every day of the week, I really would.”

Meanwhile, Glenn Hoddle praised Maddison in January 2021.

‘He’s been absolutely brilliant,” he said on BT Sport, via the Daily Mail. “I’ve always liked the lad.

“He’s been very impressive in the last four of five games.

“What I like about him is he plays with his head up. He can play balls with both feet.

“‘He gets in and around the box more now. He’s got lovely, quick feet. He’s becoming a goal scorer.”
