Spurs’ reported Serge Aurier stance could lead to big error

A report from Foot Mercato this week has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are willing to sell Serge Aurier this summer amid interest from Paris Saint-Germain.

Aurier’s future is likely to be a talking point over the coming months. Foot Mercato reports that his contract expires in 2022.

Interestingly, it appears that Spurs are prepared to cash in. They have reportedly set an asking price of £10 million.

It would be little surprise if plenty of Tottenham fans were more than happy at the prospect of seeing the right-back leave North London.

Consistency has been an issue for the 28-year-old, who earns £70,000-a-week. At times, he can look like a revelation. But he is also liable to make hugely costly errors.

However, based on a piece of business Tottenham did last summer, surely there is an argument that Spurs could make a big mistake if they let Aurier go for just £10 million.

As reported by the Guardian, Tottenham spent £14.7 million to sign Matt Doherty for Wolves.

At the time, that fee looked to have the potential to prove a real bargain.

However, Doherty has, so far, proved to be a hugely disappointing signing. Aurier has unquestionably been the better performer over the course of the campaign.

So Tottenham selling Aurier for less than what they paid for Doherty would surely be a very poor piece of business – especially as it may leave the Republic of Ireland international as the first-choice with not the greatest amount of funds in the kitty to find an upgrade.
