The Sun reported over the weekend that Tottenham Hotspur were looking at two Wigan Athletic youngsters ahead of the summer.

Spurs’s under-18 side came up against both Joe Gelhardt and Jensen Weir earlier in the year. And The Sun is now reporting that Tottenham are amongst the Premier League sides keen on signing the pair.

However, unsurprisingly, they also look set to face competition.

The Sun noted that Everton want Gelhardt, while Brighton are interested in Weir. It is added that Spurs have already made an approach to the Championship club.

And perhaps it may not be too long before Tottenham are able to follow up on their interest, based on the latest reports concerning the Latics.

The Daily Mail has now suggested that Wigan may receive clearance to start selling players before the transfer window opens.

Paul Cook’s men are having to contend with going into administration. And it appears that they may be given permission to move some players on to try and ensure that they can complete the campaign.

With their Championship status looking precarious with a points deduction in the offing, it would arguably make sense to try and offload those who are closer to the periphery of the squad.

The Mail itself suggests that Gelhardt may be one of those sold amid interest in the striker’s signature.

Selling youngsters may not help the wage bill a great deal. But it may allow the club to secure some significant transfer fees without selling those Cook would ideally like to keep for the final games of the season.

And thus, Spurs should look to act quickly should Wigan be given the green light to sell players.

That may give them a better chance of making sure that they land both of their targets. And it may improve the likelihood of getting the pair for reasonable fees.

The Sun noted that Spurs believe that Gelhardt can be developed into the next Harry Kane. And it would now appear that they may not have to wait too much longer to make their move.
