Gareth Bale has told Sky Sports (broadcast on 24/3; 22:03) that he is absolutely fine after the Spurs loanee was taken off during the latter stages of Wales’s loss to Belgium on Wednesday.

It proved to be a frustrating night for the Welsh side. After taking the lead through an absolutely stunning goal, they were beaten 3-1 by Roberto Martinez’s men.

And there may have been some concern that the evening was about to get worse for the visitors. Bale was taken off after 84 minutes with Kieffer Moore coming on.

With the game not necessarily over and Bale’s track record with injuries, some may have feared that the Tottenham attacker had sustained another issue.

However, he confirmed after the full-time whistle that the decision was taken as a precaution.

“Yeah, nothing wrong with me,” he told Sky Sports. “Obviously, I think at 3-1 down with five or six minutes to go, I was a bit tired from the shift I’d put in and we obviously have two games to go in this camp. So yeah, no injury problems.”

With Wales’s second game seeing them take on Mexico in a friendly, it is perhaps fair to say that it was a little perplexing to make that call.

Had they got one goal back ahead of stoppage-time, the contest would have been in the balance once again. And of course, no player is more likely to produce the moment of magic they needed than Bale.

But having said that, Jose Mourinho will certainly welcome any decision that results in Bale getting a rest.
