Tottenham Hotspur appear to have received a boost ahead of the summer transfer window, with Gennaro Gattuso confirming to Sky Sport Italia that Arkadiusz Milik is likely to leave Napoli at the end of the season.
Spurs are apparently monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation ahead of the window. Italian outlet Tuttosport claimed in May that Jose Mourinho’s men are in the race to land the £45 million-rated forward.
As reported by Goal, Milik’s contract at Stadio San Paolo expires at the end of next season. So it certainly already looked set to be a pivotal summer for the Poland international.
And with the end of the campaign looming, Gattuso has now suggested that it is looking likely that Milik will be moving on.
“It’s difficult to find someone better than Milik,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“However, when a player believes his time at a club is over and he wants a change of scenery, you have to listen to him.
“You can’t try to keep someone against their will, or it’s difficult to get them to listen or have the right mentality. You have to respect the wishes of the player.”
TBR View: Spurs will not want to miss out on Milik
Gattuso’s words will encourage a number of Milik’s admirers. And there will surely be plenty of Tottenham fans hoping that the admission prompts their club into action.
Milik boasts a hugely impressive strike-rate from his time in Serie A. He has scored 37 goals in 88 league games for Napoli.
However, his record looks even better when you consider that he has started just 50 times in the top flight.
Milik also offers some versatility that would arguably make him a fantastic addition to Mourinho’s ranks.
He can play up front. But he is also capable of playing in a slightly deeper role. And that may boost his chances of getting into Spurs’ lineup while providing competition for Harry Kane.
There remains little clarity over what Milik’s future may hold. But it does appear that one hurdle has been cleared with Gattuso conceding that his departure is on the cards.
