Spurs fans reply to Alderweireld tweet on Vertonghen
A number of Spurs fans have taken to Twitter to reply to Toby Alderweireld after the defender posted a classy tribute to international teammate Jan Vertonghen.
Alderweireld and Vertonghen helped Belgium to a 1-0 win over Croatia on Sunday. Romelu Lukaku scored the only goal during the first-half.
The result gives Roberto Martinez’s men a bit more momentum heading into Euro 2020. It is a tournament where Belgium will surely be expected to shine.
The weekend also proved to be a landmark occasion for two of their players. As confirmed by Alderweireld on Twitter, the game saw the 350th time the Spurs star had played alongside Vertonghen.
Of course, the pair are two of their country’s most experienced players. But they have also played together at Ajax and at Tottenham.
Spurs are now struggling to recapture the magic that the pair produced. Alderweireld did not have the best campaign in North London.
Vertonghen meanwhile, left after eight years at Tottenham last year. In that time, he made well over 300 appearances for the club.
The 34-year-old may now be into the twilight of his career. But for many Spurs fans, Alderweireld’s tweet issued a reminder of an error the club may have made.
‘See if you can bring him back to Spurs’: Alderweireld tweet on international duty may highlight Tottenham mistake
No centre-back pairing covered itself in glory at Tottenham this past season.
And after seeing Alderweireld and Vertonghen continue to impress for their country at the weekend, some believe that the club would be in a better position with the latter still in the Tottenham ranks.
With that in mind, here is Alderweireld’s tweet, along with some of the responses…

Why Vertonghen was allowed to leave Spurs will remain forever a mystery to me. I know great partnerships never last forever but these two were the best since Ledley and Dawson imho. If they’re still playing together for Belgium, I rest my case.

Yeah spurs, those were the days when we had great players in their prime & fighting for titles. When you appointed a great manager and brought fantastic players who were hungry. What happened to that club?
