If Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was hoping to avoid putting any additional pressure on himself following his move to Tottenham Hotspur this summer, he has arguably made a terrible start.
Spurs announced on Tuesday that they had completed a deal to sign the Southampton midfielder. It is perhaps not a move that would have caught the supporters off-guard given all of the speculation surrounding the Dane throughout the year.
But they will, no doubt, be very pleased to see the move go through.
One aspect of the deal that some fans do not seem best pleased with however, is the announcement concerning the midfielder’s shirt number.
The club followed the news that Hojbjerg had joined by confirming that the 25-year-old will wear the number five shirt for Jose Mourinho’s men.
Of course, it was quickly noted that Hojbjerg will be wearing the shirt vacated by club hero Jan Vertonghen earlier this summer.
The Belgian made well over 300 appearances wearing that number between 2012 and the end of the most recent campaign. And some are disappointed that his number has been taken so quickly.
Admittedly, some like the idea of Hojbjerg wearing the same number synonymous with midfielders such as Zinedine Zidane and Sergio Busquets. And only a very small minority feel that the decision is actually in bad taste.
But plenty have commented on the announcement that Hojbjerg has taken Vertonghen’s number.
Here is how some of the fans responded to the confirmation…

It’s bold of him to ask for Jan’s number. Sums up how willing he is to carry the weight that comes with it.
I’m already excited.
