A number of Tottenham Hotspur fans have admitted their surprise on Twitter after Football London reported that Serge Aurier has been rested for the Champions League game against Olympiakos this week.
Spurs open their group-stage campaign tomorrow when they face the Greek side in Athens. But there are reportedly a couple of important first-team players who will not be involved on Wednesday.
Football London reports that Aurier and Danny Rose have not travelled for the game and will stay behind along with the injured players who are ruled out of the contest.
The report notes that both men are being rested and are not injured. And that has left a number of supporters scratching their heads, particularly over the Ivory Coast international.
Aurier made his first appearance of the season at the weekend against Crystal Palace. And it is fair to say that the 26-year-old was outstanding as Spurs won 4-0. He provided two assists inside the first 25 minutes.
It was the perfect statement from Aurier, whose future looked to be in some doubt when Davinson Sanchez started the North London derby at right-back.
Mauricio Pochettino has frequently rotated his squad for European games and left important players at home. So it would be no surprise to see Aurier back in the side this weekend.
But with the full-back performing so well against Palace, some believe that it is a mistake to rest him against Olympiakos.
Here is how some of the fans reacted to Aurier’s absence…

I can understand Rose, but Aurier‘ only played one game and must be full of confidence after Saturday.

I’m sorry but Poch’s decision making in regards to team selection and substitutions needs to be spoke about far more than it currently is.

Surely not Sanchez at RB. Hope KWP is good to go.

Hearing Danny Rose or Aurier both haven’t travelled to Greece but none are injured? Not sure if it’s true but if it is that’s strange 🤔

Pochettino says Aurier needs to be more consistent but doesn’t play him for more than 1 game in a row. This guy man.
