Two games within the space of 48 hours, against a title contender and a local rival, would test any team in the Premier League.
But Spurs were especially stretched; they already have a thin squad, which was not bolstered by summer activity and Mauricio Pochettino’s options have been hit hard by an injury crisis.
The Argentine was also charged with picking his players up after a narrow 1-0 defeat on a poor Wembley pitch against reigning champions Manchester City before lining up against West Ham for the second time in a matter of weeks.
The Hammers were looking to exploit any of that lingering tiredness but Pochettino made ten changes in order to combat that.
One of the men brought in was Fernando Llorente, who was afforded a rare start as Harry Kane got a rest and he repaid his manager with a crucial second goal to all but kill the game.
The Spurs fans were very impressed with the rarely-seen Spaniard and let him know about it on Twitter…
