Spurs currently unlikely to loan out Djed Spence in January - Gold
Spence’s situation has been an incredibly intriguing one. The wing-back arrived in the summer off the back of an amazing loan spell in the Championship.
He moved into a role which had been a problem for Antonio Conte since his arrival. Matt Doherty was struggling with injury at the end of last season. And Emerson Royal has never quite been able to silence all of his doubters.
Spence loan may currently be unlikely in January
And yet, Spence has barely featured so far this season. In fact, he has only played three times in the Premier League. Each time, he came on right at the very end of the game.
Meanwhile, Emerson has had a really difficult campaign. So it is a real surprise that Spence has not played more. And thus, some may assume that he may get the chance to leave in some capacity next month.
However, Gold suggested that Tottenham’s current plan seems to be to hold onto Spence in January.
“From what I understand, I was asking around a couple of days ago, it doesn’t seem like there’s been any indication to Spence or his people yet that he’s to be sent out on loan or anything like that,” he told his YouTube channel.
“So at this moment in time, nothing about that has been communicated. Whether that changes with what happens in the January transfer window, hopefully that’s a good sign at the moment that there’s been no discussion about changing his future.”
The World Cup break may have been beneficial for Spence. He has had a chance to work closely with Conte and his coaching staff on what they want from their wing-back.
Spence clearly has huge amounts of talent. He was ‘unbelievable‘ during his time out on loan last season. But something has not clicked from Conte’s perspective.
So not having competitive games over the last few weeks may help the 22-year-old prove a point ahead of the resumption of the Premier League.
