Mauricio Pochettino has insisted, in comments reported by Football London, that he is to blame for the error that saw Hugo Lloris gift Southampton a goal in Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-1 win on Saturday.
Spurs were 1-0 up against the Saints thanks to Tanguy Ndombele. However, the visitors were given a boost when Serge Aurier was controversially sent off during the first-half.

Within eight minutes, Southampton were level. Lloris attempted to take the ball past Danny Ings inside the six-yard box, but the Frenchman got his touch all wrong and the striker was able to poke the ball home.
Spurs would recover. Harry Kane scored the goal that proved to be the winner in the second-half, and Lloris went some way to redeeming himself with some excellent saves.

And after the game, Pochettino insisted that he is not going to criticise his captain too strongly for the error that he made.
“You don’t need to blame Hugo, blame me because I demand him to play in that way,” he said, as reported by Football London.
“Of course this situation can happen, but I think the team showed unbelievable spirit after that. A few situations that could be a tough impact in a negative way today we showed an amazing spirit and of course helping our fans, who were amazing.”
TBR’s View
While Pochettino is arguably being harsh on himself by taking the blame, it makes a lot of sense. Lloris does not need to be told that he made a huge error.
It would be a massive surprise if the 32-year-old made the same mistake for a long time. So there appears to be little to gain from Pochettino publicly slamming the goalkeeper.
He will be hoping that Lloris’s performance after the mistake is what Spurs fans see a lot more of in the coming weeks and months.
