Tottenham Hotspur hit the ground running in the summer transfer window, making several key signings early on.

Now, Spurs are reportedly on the verge of landing a player they’ve been grafting to sign for a number of weeks.

Tottenham were linked with Djed Spence fairly early on in the window.

But for a while, it seemed touch-and-go with regards to Spurs actually getting a deal over the line.

That was until Thursday, when reports emerged suggesting things were going in the right direction.

The Athletic‘s David Ornstein claimed Spurs were ‘on the verge of reaching total agreement’ with Middlesbrough.

Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano took to Twitter to claim talks between Tottenham and Boro were ‘finally advanced’.

And today, the Evening Standard reported that Spurs and Boro had agreed a deal.

Tottenham will apparently pay an initial £12.5m which could rise to £20m with add-ons.

Also, Spence is due at Hotspur Way for a medical today ahead of penning a ‘long-term contract’ at N17.

And Romano gave his “here we go” seal of approval on Spence to Spurs.

The transfer insider claimed the 21-year-old would pen a five-year deal with Tottenham.

This is exciting news and Tottenham fans should be buzzing over the prospect of Spence joining.

Firstly, it’s great to see how much Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy persevered in pursuit of striking a good deal for a superb player.

And of course, Tottenham will be getting themselves one of England’s best young defenders.

Spence would be Spurs’ sixth summer signing after Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet.

“One of the best”

Spence burst onto the scene last season, lighting up the Championship on loan at Nottingham Forest.

The 21-year-old’s efforts helped the Reds back into the Premier League for the first time in 23 years.

Spence also helped Forest beat Arsenal in the FA Cup, leading to Ian Wright lauding his efforts.

“Let me say, that was one of the best right-back performances I have seen for a very long time,” he said on the Wrighty’s House podcast at the time.

“If we are talking about right-backs performing at an unbelievable level, we’re talking Reece James and Trent (Alexander-Arnold).

“But I have not seen a combative, technical, swashbuckling performance like that for a very long time.”

And Boro’s Sol Bamba told talkSPORT of Spence: “The potential is there, he’s an unbelievable, fantastic player.

“Under Conte, in my opinion, I think he will learn a lot.”
