Spurs agreeing Bryan Gil loan with Valencia may prove a mistake – opinion

Bryan Gil may well be one of the next players to leave Tottenham Hotspur in this window, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Valencia have asked about taking the 21-year-old on loan.

Gil has proved to be a bizarre signing for Spurs. It was quite the statement that the club spent £21.6 million to sign the winger, with Erik Lamela moving in the opposite direction.

However, there have only been glimpses of the Spain international since his move. Instead, he spent the second-half of last season on loan with Valencia.

The youngster impressed while away. Fans of the club pleaded with their hierarchy to sign him up.

And yet, it was seemingly not enough to convince Antonio Conte to move him from the periphery of his squad. Gil proved to be an unused substitute at the weekend as Tottenham opened their Premier League account with a win.

It is not clear whether Conte sees any future for Gil at Tottenham. But if he does, Spurs surely need to consider sending him elsewhere on loan this summer.

Obviously, a return to Mestalla may help Gil build his confidence. But he has now proved himself in Spain. And yet, he did not do enough to win Conte over.

A loan to another league may help Gil take his game to that next level. And it may help the starlet become more of the well-rounded player Conte may like the look of more.

Gil has the potential to be a ‘superstar‘. And Tottenham may feel that another loan in Spain will help the club sell him for a sizeable fee next year.

But if Spurs see Gil still making the grade in North London, surely they need to set him a new challenge this season rather than have him return to the familiar surroundings which did not help him win Conte over last time.
