Sporting director suggests his club 'have to sell' their 'astonishing' player if Newcastle offer big money
Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes has suggested Newcastle United could sign Moussa Diaby from them this summer.
The former Germany midfielder has spoke to Sky Germany about Diaby, and hopes he stays with the Bundesliga side.
Last month, Newcastle were linked with a swoop for the wideman, and Rolfes has now spoken about Diaby’s future.
He did not name Newcastle but suggested that if big money came in for Diaby, the Bundesliga club would have to sell.
Newcastle could sign Diaby
“I’m optimistic about Moussa that he will play here again next season,” he said.
“But when clubs with incredibly large financial opportunities bid for such a player, we have to sell a top player at some point.”
That suggests that if the Magpies are really serious with their interest and put their money where their mouth is, they could have some success.
Diaby has been described as ‘astonishing‘ and also linked with Arsenal, who look to have missed out on Raphinha as it stands.
It was recently reported in Germany that Leverkusen want £51million for Diaby, but Dan Ashworth and co are only willing to pay £34million.
Unless a huge bid comes in, it doesn’t sound like Leverkusen will be selling, and Newcastle have been fairly prudent since the takeover, so time will tell on this one.
