Spending £35.8m on Bruno Fernandes would make no sense for Everton at present

Everton are reportedly looking at Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes. According to A Bola, the Portuguese international is wanted by his fellow countryman Marco Silva to strengthen the Everton midfield.

The report suggests that, despite his €100 million (£89.5 million) release clause, he is likely to cost around €40 million (£35.8 million). The 24-year-old, who has 11 caps for Portugal, is undoubtedly a talented player.

However, if Everton are going to spend that sort of money, Fernandes is the wrong man.

Simply put, the club does not need any more central midfielders. With Andre Gomes wanted permanently, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Gylfie Sigurdsson, Tom Davies and Morgan Schneiderlin all on the books it would seem an area where Everton do not need to urgently strengthen.

Considering their weaknesses at right-back, up front and in goalkeeping reserve, Everton would be far wiser to spend their money strengthening in those positions.

Fernandes may be a very talented midfield operator, but if Everton want Andre Gomes permanently and have other pressing matters, then spending £35.8 million on Fernandes just seems like a mistake.
