Leeds United are said to be in the mix to sign Barcelona midfielder, Riqui Puig, and the youngster has previously made quite the impression on AC Milan legend, Gennaro Gattuso.
The Italian, who won the World Cup in 2006 and is now managing in his homeland with Napoli, witnessed the talents of Puig during a friendly back in 2018.
Puig, 21, is said to be on his way out of Barcelona in January on loan, with 90Min claiming that Leeds are among the clubs being considered by the Catalan giants.
And it seems the Whites could be getting quite the player, if Gattuso’s comments are to be considered.
“Riqui is spectacular. Even though they [Barca] have players that look like kids, the way they handle the ball amazes me. It’s the beauty of football. It’s like poetry,” Gattuso said. (quotes via Planet Football)
“I heard about him a while ago, and about some of the other kids at the club. It’s the kind of thing you can’t really copy and paste. It’s something that takes years to do. It’s how they feel the game.”
Puig has made an impression in Barcelona but is struggling for regular minutes under Ronald Koeman. Leeds, along with Monaco and RB Leipzig, are said to be potential destinations for the young midfielder.
Big praise and a big talent – TBR View
There’s no doubt Puig is a massive talent with huge potential and it would be a signing that Leeds fans would be able to get right behind given his reputation.
He’d bring quality and class to the midfield area, without question. However, whether he’d get into the team or fit with Marcelo Bielsa’s hard-working and high-pressing philosophy, is another matter.
Leeds would no doubt love a player like Puig on the books but if he isn’t going to play, then there seems little point, as much as most Whites fans would probably love to see a Barcelona starlet arrive in West Yorkshire.
