Spanish media react to Tottenham defender Pedro Porro’s display after rare start in 1-0 win vs Denmark

Despite his impressive performances for Tottenham Hotspur since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival, Pedro Porro has often been overlooked for Spain.

Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal has had the position on lock for his country in recent years, meaning Porro has often remained at Tottenham during international breaks.

However, Carvajal recently suffered a serious knee injury, presenting an opportunity for Porro, who only had two caps for his country prior to facing Denmark on Saturday evening.

Previously, Jesus Navas was Carvajal’s first-choice back up, however the 38-year-old called an end to his international career after winning the Euros this summer.

And with a change of guard, at least until Carvajal returns, Porro is now first-choice with Celta Vigo’s Oscar Minguez called-up as his understudy.

That being said, Porro earned his third cap for Spain in their 1-0 win over Denmark, playing the entire 90 minutes of the clean sheet.

The Spurs defender was positioned just behind young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal, someone who has already been mentioned as Lionel Messi’s heir.

And all in all it seemed as if Porro delivered a solid foundation for future success – a display with plenty of positives but also aspects to work on.

Handing Porro a 6/10, which was a fairly average score for Spain’s players, Sport wrote: “He was often on the right flank, although he needed to get a better understanding with Lamine. 

“At times he would go up his flank with intensity without realising that the Barça player was already occupying that space.

“He improved in the second half and even tried to get an outside shot.”

Marca scored Porro a little lower at 5.5/10, but then weren’t overly critical in their justification.

“The right-back was solid defensively and gave fluidity. In the second half he dared and shot from distance but it went wide.”

Porro seems very likely to start for Spain in another home fixture against Serbia on Tuesday before he then returns to north London.

Spurs threw away their lead and all of their strong momentum against Brighton & Hove Albion just before the break.

Porro impressed with his passing range in that defeat but did then struggle to contain Kaoru Mitoma.

That being said, it was Destiny Udogie who seriously struggled for Tottenham, another player who needed to take confidence from his time away with his country.

Tottenham need a reaction in their coming fixtures, and an emphatic win against West Ham United would definitely be a good start.
