Southampton’s Sofiane Boufal reportedly wants to move to Nice this summer

Boufal apparently cost £16m when he joined in 2016.

Southampton trickster Sofiane Boufal is closing on a move to Ligue 1 outfit Nice, according to a report by French outlet L’Equipe.

They report that fellow French clubs Bordeaux and Marseille were both interested in the £65,000-a-week (Spotrac) man, but he prefers the switch to Nice.

Boufal joined Southampton in 2016 for a reported (BBC) £16 million – a club record at the time – but he will apparently leave for 10 million euros (£9 million).

Nice are reportedly in advanced negotiations with the Saints over the 25-year-old, who has been unable to show his quality on a consistent basis in England and spent last season on loan with Celta Vigo.

Southampton have lost their way in the transfer market in recent years – which is one of Ralph Hasenhuttl’s biggest challenges to sort out – and Boufal was an expensive bust.

They look set to get a decent chunk of their money back for a player they will hope doesn’t flourish like Dusan Tadic did after leaving the south coast.

Hasenhuttl’s wide players need to be disciplined, quick and clinical and Boufal’s unpredictability is at odds with that.

It’s a shame from a Southampton point of view that Boufal didn’t work out, but at least he’ll always have that solo strike against West Brom…
