Southampton star reacts when asked about a potential move to Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in raiding Southampton for a second successive summer to bring Jannik Vestergaard to North London – but the defender has told Tipsbladet that it is a “pat on the back” to be linked with Spurs.

Vestergaard, 28, has been somewhat indifferent at Southampton since joining the club from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2018 for a fee of £18million (Mirror). Only playing 69 times for the Saints, he has been rather inconsistent.

However, this season, Vestergaard is beginning to show class. Despite Southampton’s poor recent form, he has probably been one of their better players. His form has caught the eye of Spurs who are in the market for central defenders.

Danish news outlet BT claim that Spurs are interested in the 20-time Denmark international, a teammate of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Christian Eriksen. But Vestergaard has stated that while he is flattered, he is focused on playing for Southampton.

“I can only say that of course it’s always a pat on the back with stories of interest from other big clubs. But right now I have a contract with Southampton so, it’s not something I can talk about,” Vestergaard said, while on international duty.

TBR’s view – Tottenham can do better than Vestergaard

While he would certainly sort out their issues from set-pieces given he is a huge 6ft 5in, Vestergaard has a distinct lack of pace and mobility. He is hardly the best on the ball, and is likely to cost more than the fee Southampton paid to sign him.

Spurs can do a lot better and they need to, if they are to qualify for the Champions League this season. Even if they fail to do so, they will be tasked with reaching the top four next term and while Vestergaard is good – he is not Spurs level.
