According to the Sheffield Star, Shane Long has been the subject of interest from Championship promotion chasers Sheffield United in recent days as Chris Wilder sets his sights on a January move for the Republic of Ireland international to boost his firepower.
Southampton are struggling for goals right now themselves but Long has shown himself incapable of rectifying their struggles in that respect, so Mark Hughes should consider the deal carefully.
Long is a willing runner who would perhaps do well in the Championship, but he has shown he is not the man this Saints side can rely on to bag the goals to steer them out of trouble.
Ideally, they would sell Long to secure some cash which they could put towards a replacement, but a loan deal may work in the club’s favour as well.
If Long enjoys a successful loan spell with the Blades, he would return to St Mary’s full of confidence after his first glut of goals for many a year.
Either way, Hughes must clear the way to bring in a striker who could score the goals he needs in order to keep Southampton away from the Premier League. The fresh start would suit everyone.
