Southampton should offload defender Sam McQueen this summer

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl will be preparing for next season and he can do so after making a positive impact since he took charge at St Mary’s.

He guided the Saints away from relegation trouble and they should be looking up the table next season.

There needs to be a few changes made to the squad over the summer, with some shown the exit doors.

Southampton should consider offloading defender Sam McQueen in this summer transfer window, as it looks unlikely he can make a serious first-team breakthrough.

The 24-year-old was loaned out to Middlesbrough in the Championship at the beginning of the season, but was unfortunate to be hit with a serious injury that meant he played just seven times.

He still has two years left on his deal at the South Coast club, but surely he won’t make a senior breakthrough again.

McQueen is a left-back that has featured 29 times for Southampton since coming through their academy and looked a bright prospect at one point.

But an injury-hit season has made him regress even further and he looks mile away from Hasenhuttl’s team.

They currently have Ryan Bertrand and Matt Targett as full-back options going into next season, which leaves McQueen in a difficult position.
