According to the Daily Mail, Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan are leading the charge to sign Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand this summer. The Saints appear ready to cash in on the defender, who is attracting plenty of suitors.
The 19-cap England international is 29-years-old and only has two years left on his current deal with the south coast club. Therefore, this could be Southampton’s last chance to sell Bertrand for a big fee.
Ralph Hasenhuttl should take this opportunity and look to reinvest the funds raised back into his squad. Bertrand has been a fine servant at St Mary’s Stadium, but he is not irreplaceable.
With the money raised from Bertrand’s departure, Hasenhuttl would be wise to launch a bid for Kieran Gibbs. The 29-year-old is currently plying his trade with West Brom in the Championship. However, the ex-Arsenal man is of top flight quality.
Gibbs is of a similar level to Bertrand and he would slot into the Saints’ backline neatly. He also likely represents an affordable target, meaning Hasenhuttl would have funds left over to invest elsewhere.
Cashing in on Bertrand and signing Gibbs to fill that gap in the squad would be smart business on the part of the Saints.
