Southampton ready bid for Thomas Delaney as Borussia Dortmund set £8.6m asking price

According to ESPN (18/05, 09:27), Southampton are ready to launch a bid to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Thomas Delaney this summer.

The Saints are set to make a move for the Denmark international as they look to improve Ralph Hasenhuttl’s options in the engine room, as he strives to avoid another relegation battle next season.

Delaney has emerged as a potential option as he faces an uncertain future at the Signal Iduna Park, where the 29-year-old will enter the final year of his contract next month and has found himself slipping down the Bundesliga outfit’s pecking order.

Delaney has mostly been utilised as an impact player from the bench under interim head coach Edin Terzic following the sacking of Lucien Favre, with Jude Bellingham and Mahmoud Dahoud becoming the established favoured central pairing.

Injuries have also restricted Delaney’s availability, with back and Achilles problems helping to hold the 52-cap international to starting roles in just 22 of his 33 appearances across all competitions, returning one goal and five assists.

Dortmund are now open to parting with their €20million (£17.2m) signing (Kicker) for half what they paid Werder Bremen in 2018, with a fee in the region of €10m (£8.6m) thought to be enough to acquire the midfield anchor.

TBR’s view:

While Delaney has fallen out of favour in Germany this season, he would represent a fantastic purchase for Southampton by offering Hasenhuttl a vastly experienced player with title-winning experience who can operate from box-to-box and spread play wonderfully.

The midfielder is also a leader on the pitch who puts the team above his own desires, which has proven very beneficial for Dortmund this term by slotting in and performing well at centre-half when the North Rhine-Westphalia natives have been short of natural options.

It was after an impressive display in the backline against TSG Hoffenheim that Borussia’s Sports Director Michael Zorc told Ruhr Nachrichten: “Delaney did an outstanding job.”

But Delaney often performs at a very high standard in the engine room, too, when fit, making him a potential bargain for Southampton if signed for around £8m this summer.
