Southampton must wish they had cashed in on £20m Cedric Soares now
Southampton’s rousing win against Arsenal at the weekend was in part thanks to youngster Yan Valery. The Frenchman put in a tremendous performance at right-back as he continues to impress for the Saints.
He is currently playing instead of Portuguese international Cedric Soares.
Soares is currently suffering with a calf strain but, in fairness, Southampton fans are probably not missing him.
The defender was a star for the club initially. Such impressive form saw him being linked with a host of clubs. Juventus were said to be very keen on the Portugal star. As reported by the London Evening Standard, Chelsea were willing to pay £20 million for him, before Davide Zappacosta was brought in instead.
But this season, his performances have dipped dramatically. Cedric has not been able to reproduce his best form and some Southampton fans believe it is perhaps down to the previous transfer noise.
Right now, he cannot simply breeze back into the Southampton starting XI. Valery has deserved his spot and should not be easily displaced. His future at Southampton, therefore, looks troubling.
The Saints would no longer be able to demand such an attractive fee for the player. In hindsight, cashing in for £20 million could have been a good idea.
