A year ago saw Southampton sign Guido Carrillo from Monaco in a £19.2 million deal. It was the club’s record signing and he was brought in by Mauricio Pellegrino to help bring goals to St Mary’s.
Pellegrino knew the player from his time at Estudiantes. So, when Pellegrino got the sack in March, the writing looked on the wall.
Carrillo’s playing time diminished under Mark Hughes. In the end, he played just 10 times for the club without scoring a goal.
“We’ve also loaned Carrillo and Boufal and Ralph’s going to take a look at them.
“There’s no 100 per cent guarantee that they would be sold in the summer or not.
“They will come back, and we will re-evaluate them.”
– Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger on Carrillo and Sofiane Boufal
In the summer he was loaned out to Leganes, now managed by Pellegrino.
Now, a year after he first joined the club, he has been given a second chance. It appears that he will get a chance to impress new boss Ralf Hasenhuttl in the summer and he could be as good as a brand new signing.

He has been in good form in Spain. His hard-working bullish nature has made him popular with the fans at his new club and would certainly lend itself to the Austrian’s style of play. Leganes are fighting a relegation battle and Carrillo will hope to help them stay in La Liga.
After that, should Southampton continue their resurgence, he may be worth giving another chance to the Argentine striker.
