Southampton might have missed a bargain as David Okereke makes £7.2m move

Southampton’s apparent pursuit of David Okereke can now be put to bed. The Saints had recently been linked with the transfer of the Nigerian attacker.

Toward the end of last month, it looked as though Southampton could win the race to sign the player from Italian side Spezia.

The Sun reported that a £15 million deal was in the pipe-line for the 21-year-old frontman.

However, the report stated Okereke was being looked at due to frustrations in the pursuit of Birmingham City attacker Che Adams.

Southampton have since concluded the signing of the 22-year-old from the Championship club.

So this should come as no surprise.

But if Southampton were still keen on bringing in Okereke they can now forget all about it.

The striker has joined Belgian outfit Club Brugge. The deal to sign the player from Spezia was reportedly worth €8 million (£7.2 million), according to Football Italia. The Belgian side recently lost star striker Wesley Moraes to Aston Villa and Okereke will be charged with filling his boots.

Southampton are clearly happy with the Adams deal but it seems Okereke could have been a bargain recruit.

He scored 10 goals and provided 12 assists last season in Serie B. At just 21, he would have fitted Ralph Hasenhuttl’s youth policy perfectly.

Hopefully, Southampton can keep tabs on the player and see if he progresses into a player worth targeting again in the future.
