Southampton climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone last night with a 2-0 win over relegation rivals Fulham.

The Saints secured victory thanks to goals from midfield duo Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse in the first half.

The latter’s performance highlighted the element of intrigue within his game.

It was the 24-year-old’s fourth goal in the last seven games and he is clearly in decent form.

The challenge for boss Ralph Hasenhüttl now is to get the very best out of Ward-Prowse each and every week.

At 24-years-old, the central midfielder already has 224 Saints appearances to his name, having risen through the youth ranks at the club.

He has been part of promotion-winning squads from League One and the Championship and boasts 16 goals and 28 assists.

There is a reason to suggest that he could do more, however.

The midfielder has just one England cap to his name and since making his debut in 2017 he has failed to add to his tally.

Consistency is key for Ward-Prowse.

The last seven games he has highlighted his undoubted quality, but as is so often the case with lots of other players, doing it regularly has proved to be the issue.

If Hasenhüttl can do what other manager’s haven’t and make Ward-Prowse a consistent performer, then the Saints will climb the table at a rapid rate.
