Southampton: Fonte latest; debutantes impress; Twitter's take on Hojbjerg

Southampton fans will be disappointed to come away with just one point from the tie against Watford on Saturday. Despite a lacklustre first half, the Saints line up rallied in the second to rescue a point and were unlucky not to take the lead.

New signing Nathan Redmond bagged the equalising goal and thoroughly impressed on his debut on the wing, contrary to Claude Puel’s intention of turning him into a striker. The Saints midfield looked unsure to begin with, but the introduction of Pierre-Emile Højbjerg steadied the ship. His consistent passing and drive through the centre of the pitch rejuvenated Southampton in the second half.

Jose Fonte was absent due to fitness reasons and, of course, was subject to more transfer rumours linking him to Manchester United. The Manchester Evening News reported that Jose Mourinho intends to bring another centre half to Old Trafford, with Fonte at the top of the list should he fail to land Raphael Varane or Leonardo Bonucci.

Speculation around Fonte has persisted throughout the transfer window after several impressive and incredibly consistent seasons in the Premier League. The 32-year-old has been tempted by a move according to Portuguese publication O’Jogo and he’s a client of agent Jorge Mendes, who has close links with both Mourinho and United.

Could Centre-Forwards Become Extinct?

A move hasn’t materialised yet though, and journalist Simon Peach doesn’t believe it will either.

Fonte has played up through the leagues with Southampton and has been at the club for the last six years. While a move to a club of Manchester United’s stature may be tempting, pushing for European football with a club close to his heart could be an even more alluring proposition.

It is unlikely that Fonte would be more than a squad player at United and the amount of football he wants to play will factor into the decision.

For the time being though, the Portuguese remains a Southampton player.

While the Watford result may have been a disappointment, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg undoubtedly was not. The central midfielder came off the bench to make his debut in a Saints shirt and salvaged an otherwise questionable midfield performance.

The youngster managed a 100% pass completion rate and sparked a renaissance in the Saints line up.

Fans on Twitter were substantially impressed with the Danish international:

The departure of Victor Wanyama stung for the Saints, but in Højbjerg there’s a near-ready-made replacement with a more diverse range of talents, better technical work and a much higher ceiling to grow into.
