Southampton fans want to sign Danny Rose after Tottenham exit
Danny Rose is facing an uncertain future after his exit from Tottenham was confirmed on Thursday. But some Southampton fans on Twitter have rallied together to claim they should try bring him to St Mary’s.
A selection of supporters from Premier League club Southampton believe the 30-year-old would be a perfect target for them now that he’s available on a free transfer.
Spurs announced on their official website yesterday the departure of Rose following the conclusion of his contract.
Unfortunately, the defender had a sour end to his Spurs career after failing to make a single first-team appearance during his final season. He’s spent the year with the Under-23s after being left out of the 25-man Premier League squad.
That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be remembered as an excellent player for the north London club. He made senior 214 appearances during a 14-year spell with them.
The left-back started the Champions League final defeat to Liverpool back in 2019. Additionally, he was part of the group that were in firmly in the Premier League title race back in the 2015/16 campaign before falling short against memorable winners Leicester City.
He was at his very best when he was a flying machine at left-back, while in the opposite full-back position at Spurs had Kyle Walker at right-back.
Rose completely fell out of favour in the end, but in his peak was such a vital player for them.
Sergio Reguilon, who has been a little inconsistent at times, is the new first-choice left-back at Spurs that will hope to nail down that position for an extended period of time just like his predecessor. The 24-year-old Spaniard should take tips from Rose in his peak.
What next for Danny Rose’s future?
If you consider Rose is going to be extremely lacking in match sharpness at first-team level, it will need someone to take a punt on him to find a new club ahead of next season.
The quick full-back did have a brief loan spell with Newcastle United in the 2019/20 campaign, and he needs to find a similar destination. He should still have the ability to make a difference at a Premier League side.
Southampton does look a great fit on paper.
The Saints need a new left-back after the departure of Ryan Bertrand.
Rose, who has 29 senior international caps for England, could be a like-for-like Bertrand replacement given all his top level experience.
You’d suspect the left-footed defender will demand a sizeable wage, but surely he’ll have to take a cut from what he was on at Spurs.
Aged 30, he could still turn out to be a top signing for a top-flight English club if he can regain form and fitness.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton are a team that like to try play an attacking brand of football, which is why they should be an attractive suitor to Rose if they decide to make a move for him. He really could do with a good pre-season to make sure he’s prepared for the 2021/22 campaign.
Rose’s agent should be frantically trying to sort a transfer as soon as possible.
