A number of Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react to comments that Cedric Soares made to The Telegraph where he suggested that he is currently expecting to leave the Saints next summer.
Cedric has endured a mixed time with the Saints. They finished in the top-half of the Premier League during his first two seasons with the club. However, it has been a struggle for both the right-back and the club since.
Southampton have finished just above the relegation zone in the last two seasons. And unfortunately, it appears that many supporters would probably take a similar position for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men this time around.
Cedric spent the second-half of last season on loan at Inter Milan. His time in Italy failed to ignite, and he has not exactly recaptured his old form since returning to St Mary’s.
There is a lot of uncertainty on the south coast right now. But it appears that Cedric has already made a decision on his future as he suggested that he plans to move on when his contract expires next summer.
“Obviously Southampton is very important in my career and always will be. But right now after this season I think I am going to make another step and see what is the best for me. It’s a great opportunity and it’s something (being out-of-contract) that maybe happens once in your life for a player,” he told The Telegraph.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Saints fans’ biggest frustration appears to be the timing of the comments. We are not even a third of the way through the season and the players should arguably be focused on getting the team out of trouble.
It is not going to do Cedric many favours. If he does play poorly in the coming months, the Saints fans will have every right to question his desire to play for the club when he seemingly has one eye on his next move.
It must be noted that plenty of supporters do not appear to be particularly bothered that he is leaving. But they cannot understand the benefit of making these comments now.
Here is what some of the supporters make of Cedric’s comments…
Big game this weekend against another team struggling for form with a season defining run of fixtures on the horizon.
“Oh by the way everyone, just in case you didn’t know: I’m off next summer.”

Not worried about Cedric leaving at the end of the season. Might encourage us to sign some full backs for once. #SaintsFC

So we’re losing Cédric on a free. Next summer’s already looking terrible. #SaintsFC

Not really. He’s ok but nothing special. Overrated because he won the Euro 2016 playing with a team which carried him.
