A number of Southampton fans on Twitter have been left stunned after watching Jannik Vestergaard produce another fine performance in their 2-0 victory over Everton on Sunday.

Vestergaard has come in for a lot of criticism during his time at St Mary’s. He struggled to impress in his first two seasons following his £18 million move from Borussia Monchengladbach (via Sky Sports).

It appears that many Southampton supporters would have been happy to see him leave in the past. However, Ralph Hasenhuttl never quite seemed to lose faith in the 28-year-old.

Nevertheless, some fans would have been forgiven for having major concerns ahead of Sunday’s game. The Toffees top the table and Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been sensational in the early weeks of the campaign.

But Vestergaard was outstanding against Carlo Ancelotti’s side. Along with Jan Bednarek, the Dane ensured that Calvert-Lewin barely got a sniff during the contest.

As shown by Whoscored.com, no player won more aerial duels or made more clearances. And his performance has been lauded by the fans on social media following the game.

Some have even made apologies to Vestergaard for writing him off in the past. Many have heaped praise on the defender, as well as Hasenhuttl for sticking with him when several were convinced that he was not good enough.
