Southampton fans react as Tottenham-linked Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg admits he wants exit

Southampton captain Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has told Sport1 – as per the Evening Standard – that he wants to leave the Saints and move to a bigger club – and Southampton supporters have reacted on Twitter, amid links with Tottenham.

Back in January, Hojbjerg was interesting Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton as he looks set to enter the final 12 months of his contract this summer. Sky Sports claimed the trio were keen and a summer move was likely, with his value rated at £35million.

The 33-time Denmark international has been a crucial part of a Southampton side that are seemingly safe from relegation, sitting seven points clear of the drop zone in 14th place. However, that could all change with nine games to play.

Hojbjerg has responded to rumours surrounding his future and stated that he is open to a move this summer in order to further his career, having previously played for Bayern Munich and Schalke.

“I know what I want, the club knows it too,” Hojbjerg said. “I want to play at a higher level. The relationship between me and Southampton is fantastic. The club gave me the platform to grow.  I’m not saying ‘goodbye’, I’m focused on my club.

“But my goal is very clear: I want to win the Premier League and the Champions League. I gained a lot of experience [at Bayern Munich] so that I could move on to develop elsewhere. I’m hungry to get to the next level.”

Tottenham are likely to be in the market for a central midfielder, especially with Mousa Dembele’s replacement Tanguy Ndombele struggling in north London since his club-record move from Lyon last summer.

Southampton supporters responded on Twitter to the news that their captain had made it clear that he wants to move on ahead of the summer window, with Tottenham strongly linked with a move for the Austrian maestro.
