Danny Ings scored a brace to give Southampton the bragging rights in the south coast derby. The nippy striker scored both of Southampton’s opening goals on their way to a 4-0 win over local rivals Portsmouth.
Ings, who had only scored once in seven games before last night, put the Saints ahead at Fratton Park with a cool low finish. He collected the ball on the edge of the box and fired past Craig MacGillivray in the Portsmouth goal.
Then, the ex-Liverpool striker doubled Southampton’s lead. Michael Obafemi played an intricate through ball behind the Pompey defence and Ings raced onto it. He narrowly beat MacGillivray to the ball, dinking it over the goalkeeper and into the net.

Second-half goals from Cedric Soares and Nathan Redmond sealed a positive evening for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men. It was an important result for Southampton – not just for the derby bragging rights but also for the confidence going into the league.
Ings has only scored once in the Premier League and will now be eyeing more goals for Southampton. Here are some Southampton fans reacting to the 27-year-old’s display.
