Southampton fans praise Jannik Vestergaard for Manchester United performance

Southampton managed to draw 1-1 at home to Manchester United on Saturday afternoon – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter picked out defender Jannik Vestergaard for immense credit for his performance.

The Saints came from behind at St Mary’s to earn a point in the final Premier League game before the international break.

Ralph Hasenhuttl saw his side fall behind to a 10th minute goal from Daniel James, who fired an unstoppable shot to the top corner for the visitors.

But Southampton stuck in the game and in the 58th minute drew level with a towering header from colossus centre-back Vestergaard.

The 27-year-old has waited to score his first goal for the club and it finally came against Manchester United.

Kevin Danso’s needless dismissal in the 73rd minute for a second booking left the hosts with their back to the wall late on, but they held on and have four points from their first four league matches.

A selection of Saints fans on social media hailed Vestergaard for his display at the back and he played a major role in earning a point.

The Danish centre-back made blocks and interceptions, while his teammate alongside him Jan Bednarek also impressed in the heart of the backline.

He’s divided opinion since he moved to St Mary’s last summer, but was on top form at the weekend and received a vote of confidence from fans.
