Yan Valery was recalled to the Southampton XI for the defeat against Cardiff City – and some of the club’s supporters were pleased with his comeback performance.
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side unfortunately slipped to a 2-1 loss at St Mary’s, which saw them move into the relegation places on Saturday.
Kenneth Zohore scored a 93rd minute winner to snatch Cardiff the win and that was just after Jack Stephens had appeared to rescued a draw with a goal in the 91st minute.
The Saints are only behind 17th-placed Newcastle United on goal difference, but have some catching up to do now.
It was certainly one of the season’s low points for Southampton losing at home to Cardiff, but a selection of fans were thrilled with how Valery performed.
Valery has been in and out of the side so far during Hasenhuttl’s reign, with some glimpses of quality perhaps overshadowed by naive moments.
The 19-year-old did deliver one of his most mature displays to date though against Cardiff at right-back and will hope he can make that position his own.
He showed some positive sings going forward from the wing-back role with direct dribbles and looked defensively sound.
Here are some of the Southampton fans that were impressed by Valery:
Thought Valery was superb, Berty looked solid and will only get better. However attacking wise we were useless, no urgency even at 1-0 down. Something needs to change when playing against defensive teams because the cutting edge is missing. #SaintsFC
