Southampton fans hail Oriol Romeu for latest performance

Southampton were beaten 3-1 at home to Bournemouth on Friday night – but some of the club’s supporters on Twitter still found some positive from the performance of midfielder Oriol Romeu.

The Saints were beaten at St Mary’s in the Premier League fixture and missed out on the opportunity to jump up to third in the table.

After a sloppy first-half, the hosts found themselves with a two-goal deficit on the scoreline and were fighting an uphill battle.

Nathan Ake opened the scoring with his header from a corner after 10 minutes, while Harry Wilson converted the second with a brilliant team goal for the visitors.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were given a lifeline when James Ward-Prowse netted a penalty early in the second-half and pushed hard for an equaliser.

But they were unable to make the breakthrough and a mix up at the back allowed Callum Wilson to add a third Bournemouth goal in stoppage time.

A selection of Southampton supporters on social media believe that Romeu was a standout performer despite ending up on the losing team.

The 27-year-old completed 90 minutes on Friday night and is an ever-present in the team.

He is a Spanish midfielder renowned for his hard tackling and defensive cover, which is something he showed against Bournemouth by constantly breaking up play.
