Southampton fans hail Gunn after clean sheet on Premier League debut at Chelsea

Southampton were comprehensively outclassed by Manchester City in their final game of 2018 and while that is no disgrace, it was no surprise to see Ralph Hasenhuttl make eight chances for the trip to Chelsea last night.

A trip to Stamford Bridge was a testing assignment in which to get back on track, but the Saints did exactly that; grinding out a 0-0 draw, recording their first Premier League clean sheet since October in the process.

One of the key factors behind that long overdue shutout was Angus Gunn, who replaced Alex McCarthy to make his Premier League debut for the club he joined from Manchester City in the summer.

The English stopper had been forced to be patient since that summer switch to the south coast, but took his opportunity with both hands last night.

He was the outstanding performer as Chelsea struggled to turn their domination of possession into goals, proving unbeatable having been thrown in at the deep end on his maiden top flight outing.
