Ambitious Dzeko swoop can spark life into sorry Southampton

Southampton have just about managed to keep their heads above water but further additions are necessary to spark life back into Mark Hughes’ side.

The Saints have won just won of their opening eight Premier League matches and have scored just six goals, with only Crystal Palace, Huddersfield and Cardiff scoring less so far this term, suggesting another fight against the drop is on the cards.

It was a similar story last year when only Brighton had a worse goal-scoring record than Southampton out of the clubs that avoided relegation and it shows that a new, prolific scorer is what the club are crying out for – and an ambitious move is on the cards.

The Daily Mirror states Southampton are in the running to sign Roma striker Edin Dzeko, who is exactly the sort of player the Saints need after he hit 50 Premier League goals for Manchester City during his time in England.

Now 32, Dzeko would only be a short-term fix but is the sort of signing that can provide the difference between securing the club’s top-flight status for another year or slipping into the Championship – although securing his services will not be easy.

Crystal Palace and Cardiff are also said to be in the hunt and Roy Hodgson’s side could be seen as favourites as they can offer the chance for Dzeko to enjoy life in the capital.
