Southampton and Tottenham agree fee for midfielder Wanyama – Twitter reacts

For a while now, speculation has surrounded the future of Kenya captain and midfielder Victor Wanyama, who was first linked with a move in the summer of 2014 after he expressed disappointment at Mauricio Pochettino’s decision to move to the capital to manage at White Hart Lane. Since then, rumours have spread like wildfire, particularly when he reportedly rejected a new long term contract heading towards the end of the season, with just one year of his original deal left.

The holding midfielder has so far scored four goals in 97 appearances over three season at St. Mary’s, but now looks set to be the first to head through the exit door in the footsteps of boss Ronald Koeman, who recently moved to Everton. Whilst he provides an exciting alternative to young Englishman Eric Dier for Tottenham, and could easily play alongside Dier or Dembele, Spurs fans could easily be forgiven for holding concerns over his disciplinary record, with the Saints player having picked up three red cards last season alone, and 25 yellows over his spell at the south coast club, averaging one every four games.

Wanyama would become the first player to re-join former manager Mauricio Pochettino in London, who previously failed to lure Morgan Schneiderlin, and could lead an exodus yet again at Southampton, who may face yet another major squad rebuild with the likes of Shane Long recently linked with a move away. Consolation for Saints fans could be that the club is making progress in their hunt for a new boss, whilst some sources claim that Norwich winger Nathan Redmond could be set to sign.

That will only lessen the pain should they lose their tough-tackling midfielder though. With a fee agreed, reports claim that Wanyama will now undergo a medical at White Hart Lane and could sign within 48 hours, for an as yet undisclosed fee.
