Southampton 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur: Three things we learnt

Tottenham need to be taken seriously

They have gone under the radar until now, but they are a very good side and will be challenging for at least a top four spot until the final weeks of the season. They have only lost two league matches this season and have been difficult to beat thanks to a defensive record only bettered by league leaders Chelsea. Their problem has been scoring goals, but they have looked more dangourous in recent weeks. Both Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli are showing the ability that they did last season, which only bodes well for the second half of the season.

Tottenham’s goal difference is more than competitive and if their attack continues to improve, they will be serious challengers for a top four finish. It seems unlikely that they will challenge for the title as they are ten points behind Chelsea, but they should be confident of overhauling at least one of the current top four. Arsenal have looked shaky this month, while Manchester City haven’t convinced at all. Spurs look to be in better shape than both of those sides and will be hoping to ride the wave of confidence into 2017. There is less pressure on Tottenham to finish in the top four and that could be a huge advantage for them over the coming months.
