Southampton 1-4 Tottenham Hotspur: Three things we learnt

Virgil van Dijk is too good for Southampton

It was by no means his best performance for the club as Southampton shipped four goals, but he does look a class above this level. He is a complete centre half and would be a good addition to almost any side in the world. His passing was impressive as he finished with an 80% accuracy and often looked to be positive in his distribution. Van Dijk can dominate in the air as he showed with seven aerial duels, including his early goal from a corner. Although he was beaten in the air by Dele Alli, it was the quality of the ball that took Van Dijk out of the game as the attacker had a run on him, rather than poor defending.

His reading of the game marks him as one of the finest defenders in the league and he displayed that with three interceptions, more than any other player on the pitch. At the age of 25, he has everything in his locker and will only continue improving over the next few years. It isn’t surprising that there is a lot of interest in him from other Premier League clubs and it would be a huge shock if Southampton line up with the Dutchman in their defence at the start of next season. They may be able to keep hold of him next month, but it will be impressive if they do again in the summer.
