Three things we learnt from Southampton’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool

Going into this game, few were expecting an out of form Southampton side to withstand the barage of a rampant Liverpool attack, but that proved not to be the case. The Saints were raring to go and fired up, whilst the side wearing their unlucky toxic thunder kit looked lethargic and sloppy on the ball.

Initially the home side failed to produce any chances, but when they did Nathan Redmond made it count, seizing on an error from Ragnar Klavan to slot past Loris Karius despite his superb display in the Liverpool goal.

Both sides sought to find an all important second goal in the second half but failed to do so, with chances going begging for both teams as neither threw themselves all out with the knowledge that there are still 90 minutes left to play at Anfield in the back of their minds.

Liverpool welcomed back Philippe Coutinho as a substitute and he made an impact but it wasn’t enough, and now we must wait until the second leg on Merseyside to see who will progress to Wembley, but the Saints have the upper hand.
