The Saints aren’t missing Ronald Koeman
On what was always going to be a tough afternoon for Ronald Koeman returning to the club which he left under a cloud in the summer, but it could not have gone much worse for him than it inevitably did.
After a poor start, the Toffees were on the back foot throughout much of the game and managed just one effort on target as Southampton ran rings around Koeman’s team for much of the match, with the Dutchman resorting to long balls forward late on to little effect.
The introductions of Gerard Deulofeu, Kevin Mirallas and Enner Valencia should have brought pace and guile in attack, but Southampton looked composed and untroubled as Claude Puel recorded his sixth clean sheet at Saint Mary’s this season.
