Souness criticises England after Harry Kane sustains ankle injury

Graeme Souness has told ITV (broadcast on 23/11; 15:48) that England made an error not taking Harry Kane off immediately after the Tottenham Hotspur talisman sustained the ankle injury which eventually led to his substitution against Iran at the World Cup.

Kane’s fitness has been a talking point for much of the last few days. The striker came off with 15 minutes remaining of their 6-2 win over Iran in their opening group-stage game.

However, by that stage, it had been 27 minutes since he needed treatment on his ankle following a challenge.

England fans will now be worried about whether Kane will be ready for their next clash, against the United States on Friday.

But it would appear that Souness believes that the Three Lions have no-one to blame but themselves if Kane misses out. The pundit expressed his surprise that the Spurs star was allowed to continue.

“It’s not rocket science, he’s got a history with a dodgy ankle. Get him off! He needed saving from himself,” he told ITV.

In fairness, at that stage, England were 3-0 up. So they were seemingly safe to make the change. And the score was 5-1 by the time Kane did come off.

Obviously, he is invaluable to England. But Callum Wilson is a very good striker. So there should have been few concerns about throwing the Newcastle star on sooner.

Gareth Southgate may have been content to trust Kane. The captain will need no reminding of the bigger picture, and how it is important that England come through the group-stages with the fewest scars possible.

So if he said that he was able to carry on, Southgate would have had little reason to go against Kane.

Certainly, if Kane does play on Friday and England build up a comfortable lead, it would be no surprise if Southgate did indeed take him off swiftly.
