Son could be under real pressure amid reports Spurs are scouting Gakpo

Tottenham Hotspur fans were given reason for excitement this week, with reports claiming that they have been scouting Cody Gakpo ahead of the January transfer window.

Gakpo is one of the most in-form forwards in the world this season. He has scored 13 goals and contributed 17 assists for PSV Eindhoven. And he scored three times at the World Cup.

90min suggested that PSV want a club-record £45 million fee for Gakpo. Meanwhile, ESPN claimed that Spurs have been scouting the 23-year-old with Antonio Conte eyeing another wide forward.

Gakpo reports could be ominous for Son at Tottenham

It would be a massive statement if Tottenham did make a big push for Gakpo.

And it is probably fair to say that the links do put a little pressure on Son Heung-min ahead of the second-half of the season. Otherwise, Antonio Conte may have to take a decision which would have previously seemed largely unthinkable.

Son had a really tough run leading into the World Cup. Last season’s golden boot winner failed to score in all but one of his Premier League appearances this season. And he only provided a couple of assists.

And he was not able to make the impact he would have been hoping for in Qatar. In many ways, his amazing assist against Portugal was similar to his stunning hat-trick against Leicester as he briefly reminded everyone of just how world-class he is.

Son will have the chance to get back on track when the season resumes. He has been an outstanding player for Spurs down the years.

And it would take something special to dislodge him from his place in the side. But Gakpo may be that something special – if a deal was at all possible.

Admittedly, Conte does not tend to have a preferred lineup. He is prepared to rotate and wants a squad of players he can rely on at any moment.

But there is little doubt that there are some players who will play if fit. Son has previously been that in the position.

So that is why a lengthy run out of the side would come as a real shock.

But if Tottenham signed Gakpo and Son cannot rediscover some better form, he may well find himself falling down the pecking order.
