'Someone should get fired for this': Some Tottenham fans shocked after club announcement late last night
Tottenham Hotspur fans have been left surprised after Serge Aurier’s contract was terminated late last night.
It didn’t take a genius to notice that Aurier was likely to leave Spurs this summer.
However, the manner of his departure has shocked many Spurs supporters.
There was optimism that Tottenham would receive a fee for the 28-year-old defender, who they paid £23 million for (BBC Sport).
But a lack of interest meant that Spurs had to end his contract by mutual consent, which was announced late last night.
That means that Aurier will still have a chance to find a new club beyond the transfer deadline.
But it also leaves Spurs out of pocket, as they failed to generate any money from his sale.
And many Tottenham supporters were angry that Aurier was allowed to leave on a free transfer, as they feel it was poor business from the club.
The struggle to sell
Spurs will, of course, save money on Aurier’s wages now – which should help their finances.
But their failure to recoup any fee for the defender must come as a disappointment.
Tottenham offloaded a number of their fringe players this summer, but raising any significant fees was difficult.
The likes of Toby Alderweireld and Moussa Sissoko all went cheaply, which impacted on their spending power.
Spurs were still able to pull off five signings at least, with Emerson Royal arriving on deadline day to complete their business.
