Some West Ham United fans react as club announce Fabian Balbuena released
Some West Ham United fans have been reacting online after their club announced that Fabian Balbuena had been released.
David Moyes’ London Stadium outfit shared their retained list on Friday but have not offered Balbuena a new contract. His current terms will expire at the end of the month, marking the end to a three-year spell.
West Ham signed Balbuena for £6.5million from Corinthians in 2018 as one of the first signings of Manuel Pellegrini’s tenure. He made 61 appearances for the club across all competitions since, but fell out of favour under Moyes.
Balbuena only featured twice in the Premier League after starting 12 of the first 15 games of the season. His first minutes since December came in West Ham’s win over Leicester in April when replacing the injured Aaron Creswell.
The Paraguayan enforcer is now a target of his former head coach, Pellegrini. Balbuena suits the ideal profile of a centre-back for the Real Betis boss as he strives to improve his depth. Only surgery on a knee injury took the 29-year-old out of the Chilean’s plans in 2018/19.
Balbuena’s exit now leaves Issa Diop, Craig Dawson, Angelo Ogbonna, Winston Reid and Frederik Alves as Moyes’ centre-back options. The Hammers are also interested in signing Joe Worrall, but trail Burnley in the race for the Nottingham Forest leader.
West Ham fans react to Balbuena exit
West Ham supporters have been reacting on social media to news of Balbuena’s exit, with some wishing the defender well. A number of fans believe the Pellegrini signing will leave a big hole in Moyes’ squad, at least in depth.
But not all agree, with others sharing that they support Balbuena’s decision to leave at the end of his contract. That’s down to how little he had been featuring under Moyes in 2021, despite being on the bench most weeks.
